CBD extends the life of worms

Company Cannopy Growth has completed a very interesting study on the effect of CBD on life expectancy. This is the first such study in the world and the result is that CBD extends life and vitality in old age! This positive result is slightly “spoiled” by the fact that the study was conducted on only one species of worm “Caenorhabditis elegans”.

Worms were chosen for the study because these insects have a relatively short life (2-3 weeks) and the researchers were thus able to monitor the effects of CBD throughout the life of these creatures.

Scientists add that this type of worm has about 60-80% genes similar to those of humans. Their digestion, reproduction, endocrine system, senses and neuromuscular system are thus a good model for the human body.

The study further shows that CBD did not show any toxic effect on the cells, even at high doses. Practically the only negative effect was slowing down the worms’ momentum by about 30%. For the reason that they were given about 10 times more than the maximum amount for such a worm. The worm was simply full of CBD-rich food and had difficulty moving.

During a study of lifetime exposure to CBD, these worms were found to have an average 18% increase in lifespan. But, in the later age of the worm there was up to a 206% increase in activity. In humans, this phenomenon has been demonstrated with long-term use of CBD at equivalent (or higher) doses than those administered to test worms. CBD is clearly capable of mitigating age-related decline in vitality. Scientists from Canopy Growth say that “the worms were as mobile as young individuals with age” and according to the results of the studies it is clear that CBD is not harmful or toxic and rather the exact opposite can be said in connection with CBD – during long-term administration of CBD there is a large number of positive effects on human and animal health.

In this case, it was a private company study, so unfortunately it is not possible to compare the results with the effects of CBD on the human body. The goal of this (and many similar studies) is to prove to regulators around the world that CBD is safe for both human and animal use. Currently, there are many changes in the world, the view of cannabis is slowly starting to change, and any relevant study will only benefit – both patients and cannabis growers and processors. In the near future, we can look forward to a number of new studies that should push CBD and other cannabinoid research to a much higher level.
